Alberta seeks proposals for carbon sequestration hubs
The government of Alberta launched a request for full project proposals (RFPP) on December 2 seeking proposals to operate carbon capture and storage (CCS) hubs in the province.
The government initially launched a request for expressions of interest (EOI) that would inform the broader RFPP process.
“Government received numerous EOI submissions illustrating a range of proponents (large and small), emissions sources, and storage scenarios across Alberta,” the province said. “To meet the large interest that has been expressed and move forward in a manageable manner, Requests for Full Project Proposals (RFPP) will be conducted in phases based on geographical regions of the province.”
In the initial phase of the RFPP, projects will be sought that would enable CO2 sequestration in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland near Edmonton, where several CCS and blue hydrogen projects have been advanced. RFPPs for projects in other areas of the province will be rolled out beginning in the spring of 2022.
The RFPP process, Alberta said, will ultimately facilitate the granting of a carbon sequestration agreement to successful proponents, establish the boundaries of the sequestration location and facilitate the hub manager role.
Submissions to the first phase RFPP can be made beginning on January 4, 2022, with a submission deadline of 11:59 PM MST on February 1, 2022. The selection of successful proponents is targeted for the end of March 2022.
