Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania Sign Declaration for AGRI Project

Azerbaijan, Georgia and Romania signed a Joint Declaration on Wednesday to progress with AGRI, the proposed project to transport Azerbaijani gas to Romania and Central Europe.  

During the meeting also attended by BP officials in Bucharest, ministers discussed the position of member countries, final results of the feasibility study, and financing opportunities for the project. 

‘Energy Minister of Azerbaijan Natig Aliyev spoke about socio-economic importance of AGRI project. Georgia’s Deputy Energy Minister Mariam Valishvili informed on importance and support for AGRI project’ SOCAR wrote on Wednesday after the meeting.

Joe Murphy, BP’s Vice President Southern Corridor for Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey (AGT) Region, underlined that the parties should prepare the legal, economic and technical documents for effective realisations of the project.

The meeting follows a meeting between Romanian and Azerbaijani authorities, which reported an increase in economic ties between the two countries. 

‘Energy Minister of Azerbaijan Natig Aliyev spoke about successfully developing political and economic relations between Azerbaijan and Romania and gave detailed information on achievements of the country in energy sphere, and latest novelties in the Southern Gas Corridor Project’ SOCAR reported.

First negotiations were held in 2009-2010. As said by the Georgian Oil & Gas Corporation’ (GOGC), ‘SOCAR (Azerbaijan), GOGC (Georgia) and Romgaz (Romania) signed a Memorandum of Understanding and the Incorporation Act (SC AGRI LNG Project Company SRL)’ in September 2011 meant to implement the Azerbaijan-Georgia-Romania Interconnector project.  

‘At a later stage, a Hungarian company MVM joined SC AGRI LNG Project Company SRL’ GOGC reported, adding that the project is a part of the South Corridor project ‘and enjoys wide international support.’
