Baker Hughes helps tackle flaring emissions at Egyptian refinery
Baker Hughes is working with Egyptian General Petroleum Corp (EGPC) to reduce flaring-related methane emissions at the APC refinery in Alexandria in Egypt, the US contractor said on June 29.
Deploying its flare.IQ technology, Baker Hughes will help EGPC digitalise its emissions management infrastructure and obtain critical information about its flaring systems, the US firm said. This will help in "substantially reducing emissions by ensuring a higher-efficiency flare combustion rate," it said.
Egypt is set to host the 27th UN Climate Change Conference (COP27 in November, and it also contributes to the Global Methane Pledge, which is targeting a 30% reduction in methane emissions by 2030, versus levels in 2020.
“Better understanding and managing emissions is central to the oil and gas industry’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Our partnership with MoPMR demonstrates how Baker Hughes continues to collaborate with our customers in taking positive action in emissions management,” Rami Qasem, vice president of digital solutions at Baker Hughes, said in a statement. "This partnership with MoPMR supports its ambitious low-carbon strategy, and further underlines Egypt’s commitment to be at the forefront of tackling emissions in the oil and gas sector, as we approach COP27.”
