China's Tarim oilfield passes operational milestone
Tarim oilfield, one of China's biggest upstream projects, has surpassed a milestone by supplying over 350bn m3 of natural gas to the West-East gas pipeline network, its operator state-owned China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) announced on March 25.
The West-East gas pipeline, which started operations in 2004, supplies gas to more than 120 large and medium-sized cities across 15 downstream provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities.
CNPC said that with the growing demand for natural gas, the company is working on improving gas production capacity at the Tarim oilfield.
CNPC estimates that the 350bn m3 of natural gas supplied by the Tarim oilfield has the environmental benefit equivalent to replacing 466mn tonnes of coal. This substitution has led to a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 757mn tonnes, it said.
