CODELCO, NYK to work on decarbonising transportation of copper products

Chilean copper producer CODELCO and Japanese shipping company NYK have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly study the decarbonised transportation of copper products, NYK said on November 25.

CODELCO and NYK Bulk & Project Carriers, a part of NYK group, will jointly promote the evaluation and development of next-generation fuel technologies and study the use of decarbonised vessels for oceangoing transport of copper products.

NYK expects global demand for copper to increase in the future due to the expected development of power grids for offshore wind power generation, electric vehicles, etc.

“CODELCO and NYK Bulk & Project Carriers aim to contribute to the realisation of a decarbonised society by transporting and supplying copper products by means of transportation having a low environmental impact,” NYK said.
