Desfa Picked to Run Kuwaiti LNG Terminal

Greece's Desfa announced on December 11 it had landed a five-year deal to operate and maintain Kuwait's new LNG import terminal in Al-Zour.

“The high specialisation and know-how of Desfa and of the shareholders Snam and Enagas, who will jointly perform the services, had a decisive contribution to the undertaking of the project,” the Greek gas grid operator said. “The experience gained by Desfa from managing the Greek transmission system and the LNG terminal in Revithoussa, also had a catalytic contribution to the undertaking of the project.”

Construction on the Al-Zour LNG plant began in 2016 and has been scheduled for completion in 2021. The terminal is set to receive some 4mn metric tons/year of Qatari gas, under two deals reached earlier this year. It has eight storage tanks, each with a 225,000-m3 capacity. It will supply gas to industrial consumers as well as the power generation sector.

Kuwait already imports LNG at its Mina Al-Ahmadi terminal, commissioned in 2009.
