France Confirms Extention of Shale Study

In an increasingly confusing situation, the French government has confirmed that the scientific study on the environmental impact of shale gas and oil extraction will be carried on and even "prolonged".

The scientific mission, initially announced in February, will continue even though the National Assembly will debate a draft proposal to totally ban shale exploration and development on May 10th.

The Government has indicated its support for the ban, despite receiving a preliminary report that backs the search and investigation of shale gas and shale oil activities.

Companies involved in shale gas and shale oil activities whose permits have been "suspended," have been asked to take part in the scientific study.

The study was initially expected to be released by June, however no revised date has been given for the prolonged report.

A preliminary report undertaken by Senator Jacques Blanc backed the search and investigation of shale gas and shale oil resources, providing that such activities are "compatible with priorities in terms of natural sites preservation."  (Read More HERE)

France awarded three shale gas exploration licenses in March to Total SA, Schuepbach Energy LLC, and GDF Suez.

Toreador Resources Corp. in partnership with Hess and Vermilion Energy Inc. are among companies which have licenses in the Paris Basin to explore for oil trapped in shale rock.  Continental Resources Inc., Jordan Oil & Gas, and Realm Energy International were amongst companies reported to have made application for territory in the area.
