France: Fracking Practiced Dozens of Times
Energy Minister Eric Besson has said that the controversial technique of hydraulic fracturing has been "practiced dozens of times in France without difficulty."
Speaking before the Commission for Sustainable Development of the National Assembly, Besson supported conducting hydraulic fracturing "experiments," if steps are taken to minimize issues or risks.
"This technique is old. Hydraulic fracturing in 1949: it was performed dozens of times in France without debate and without raising difficulties. But its use raises new issues in the case of shale gas, because it would be done use of greater magnitude and thus greater environmental consequences, "noted the minister.
"We must ensure that the conditions for use of this technique are environmentally friendly and that its implementation will be supervised," he added.
Besson supported experiments under strict public control and transparency, saying that France would not close the door to development prospects, conducted in a responsible and respectful manner.
The French Senate has been discussing legislation approved by the National Assembly which would prohibiting hydraulic fracturing in the shale gas and shale oil exploration.
The Senate has already indicated it supports a significant amendment which would permit hydraulic fracturing "of projects for scientific purposes" with prior public inquiry.
The Senate debate has been suspended until Wednesday, 8th June.
