Gas loses its place at Alberta cabinet table
Natural gas has lost its place in the cabinet of Alberta’s new premier, Danielle Smith, with the elimination of the natural gas and electricity portfolio in a new cabinet sworn in October 24.
Dale Nally, who held the gas and electricity portfolio in the cabinet of former premier Jason Kenney, is now minister of Service Alberta and red tape reduction. Nally was named Alberta’s first associate minister of natural gas in April 2019, and had electricity added to his portfolio a year later.

Sonya Savage, formerly an executive at energy infrastructure company Enbridge and energy minister in the Kenney cabinet since April 2019, is now minister of environment and protected areas, while rookie MLA Pete Guthrie, a professional engineer, takes over as energy minister.
Smith, who replaced Kenney as premier October 6 after he stepped down as leader of Alberta’s United Conservative Party following a leadership review in May, will seek a seat in the provincial legislature in a November 8 byelection. The next general election in Alberta is set for May 29, 2023.
