Gasum pens renewable e-methane supply pact with Nordic Ren-Gas
Gasum, a Nordic energy company, has signed an agreement with Nordic Ren-Gas to procure renewable e-methane, it said on January 9.
The deal involves the supply of 160 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of renewable e-methane annually from Nordic Ren-Gas's power-to-gas plant in Tampere, Finland, starting in 2026. Gasum will be responsible for the distribution of e-methane to its customers across various sectors.
Nordic Ren-Gas will design, build, and operate the Tampere power-to-gas plant, utilising renewable electricity from Finnish wind power and biogenic carbon dioxide captured from existing power plants. The power-to-gas process involves the production of hydrogen using renewable electricity and water, followed by the transformation of hydrogen into e-methane by combining it with biogenic carbon dioxide. E-methane produced through this process is fully renewable and can serve as a clean alternative to fossil fuels in transportation, maritime, and industrial applications.
E-methane is fully interchangeable with natural gas and biogas, and when liquefied, it becomes fully interchangeable with LNG and liquefied biogas (LBG). This interchangeability allows for the use of existing infrastructure, such as trucks, ships, and pipelines, facilitating the direct utilization of e-methane in assets currently running on natural gas or biogas.
The Tampere power-to-gas plant, situated adjacent to the existing Tammervoima waste incineration plant operated by Tampere Energia, will capture biogenic carbon dioxide from the flue gas of the Tammervoima plant to produce e-methane.
