Gazprom Announces Record Supply to Europe
Russian gas giant Gazprom said it had reached record volumes of daily gas supply to Europe this week, as bitter winter temperatures struck.
Chairman Alexei Miller said 550 million cubic metres (mcm) had been recorded.
“Since the beginning of December, unprecedented growth of supplies to European market has been recorded," Miller said in his commentary on the company website Thursday. The previous 24 hours had seen the historically highest daily volumes of 550,1 mcm gas supplied to Europe.
Miller added: "This is the confirmation that the projects like Nord Stream and South Stream are timely and demanded." South Stream in particular has been subject to derision by some European commentators, including EU Energy Commissioner Gunther Oettinger.
The formal launch of construction on the €17 billion South Stream project took place last Friday. The total pipeline is planned to be 2,380 km long.
