Indonesia Formulizes Rig Specification for CBM

The Indonesian government has drawn up specifications for rigs for coal bed methane (CBM) wells in order to immediately produce the gas.

"Number of inputs gained from last week's meeting, among others, that in the preparation of specifications CBM rig efficiency without neglecting the aspect of safety," Director of Engineering and Environmental Oil and Gas Edi Purnomo said.

Edi said the use of equipment for preventing unexpected blow out and regional geological aspects are important considerations to maintain the safety, bisnis.com reported.

Safety Worker and General Section Head of Upstream Oil and Gas Patuan Alfon said that the government needs to make geological risk analysis in attempt to socialize it to CBM producers as they will know the geological potency and risks in their respective working areas.

"So the use of the rig and its equipments can be adjusted," he said.

Since it first signed in 2008, until now there are 50 working areas (WK) of CBM. During the period of 2012 to 2025, the government targets to sign 210 WK of CBM or about 15 cooperation contracts (KKS) CBM every year, bisnis.com said.

CBM production of Indonesia is expected to increase up to 1,500 million cubic feet per day (MMscfd) in 2025. The potential CBM gas in Indonesia is very large, about 453.3 trillion cubic feet (TCF) from 11 hydrocarbon basins.
