Iran Could Export 200 mcm of Gas to Georgia

Iran is talks to exports 200 million cubic meters of gas to Georgia, a senior energy official said.

Managing Director of the National Iranian Gas Export Company (NIGEC) Alireza Kameli said the contract will be initially valid for seven months and will serve as the basis to study feasibility of exporting gas to Georgia for longer duration, state owned new agency Shana reported Tuesday.

Kameli said this after meeting with Iranian Petroleum Minister Bijan Zangeneh and visiting Georgian Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister Kakha Kaladze in Tehran.

“The negotiations are underway,” he added, “We hope that based on the agreements reached so far, exporting gas to Georgia will be finalized.”

It is expected that gas export will start early in next Iranian calendar year (starting March 21).

“Georgia has to obtain necessary licenses from Armenia for the transit of gas,” Shana quoted Kameli as saying. “If it proves economical, mid- and long-term contracts will be signed with Georgia.”
