Jera, Aboitiz Power to study ammonia co-firing in Philippines
Japan’s Jera has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Aboitiz Power Corporation for a joint study on ammonia co-firing at the latter’s coal-fired power plants in the Philippines, it said on February 10.
“Both companies will consider the possibility of ammonia co-firing at Aboitiz Power's coal-fired power plants which will be a trigger for decarbonisation of Aboitiz Power, and will scrutinise target power plants for ammonia co-firing and the co-firing rate,” Jera said.
Jera in September 2021 acquired 27% of the outstanding shares of Aboitiz Power Corporation for about $1.58bn. Jera, a joint venture between Tokyo Electric Power and Chubu Electric Power, signed an agreement to purchase shares from Aboitiz Power's parent company Aboitiz Equity Ventures and its affiliate companies.
Aboitiz aims to expand its power generation capacity to 9.2 GW and achieve a 50:50 clean energy and thermal capacity mix by 2030. At the same time, Jera is working to eliminate CO2 emissions from its domestic and overseas businesses by 2050.
