Jera to conduct truck-to-ship bunkering of ammonia

Japanese power company Jera on April 10 announced a project to implement truck-to-ship bunkering of fuel ammonia.

Jera has concluded a joint study agreement with NYK Line, a leading shipping company, and Resonac Corporation, an ammonia producer, to deliver fuel ammonia to a new ammonia-fuelled tugboat owned by NYK. The bunkering operation will commence at the port of Yokohama in late May 2024.

“This project represents our first step in providing a decarbonisation solution beyond the power generation sector and into other industrial applications,” Jera said.

The ammonia-fuelled tugboat is scheduled for delivery in June 2024. Jera has also secured a fuel ammonia bunkering agreement with Shin-Nippon Kaiyosha Corporation, a subsidiary of NYK responsible for operating the tugboat.
