JSE, Japanese shipping cos join forces to develop LH2 supply chain

Japan Suiso Energy (JSE) has joined forces with three top Japanese shipping companies—Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line), Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK)—to commercialise a worldwide liquefied hydrogen (LH2) supply chain, the companies announced on September 26.

JSE will lead the development of advanced hydrogen liquefaction and transportation technology. The initial phase involves transporting 30,000 tonnes of hydrogen annually, with plans for expansion in subsequent stages, covering every aspect of the LH2 supply chain.

JSE Ocean, a subsidiary of JSE established in January 2023, will pioneer the research of LH2 marine transportation, utilising large-scale LH2 carriers designed for safe and efficient LH2 transportation across the seas.

The collaboration between JSE and the three shipping giants prioritises safety and operational efficiency. By 2024, they aim to introduce the world's first large-scale LH2 carrier. Notably, LH2 carriers will be hydrogen-powered, significantly reducing CO2 emissions during operations.
