Shell Announces New Chair

Shell has appointed Andrew Mackenzie as its new chair effective May 18, when the company's annual general meeting (AGM) is due to take place, the Anglo-Dutch major reported on March 11.

Mackenzie is succeeding Chad Holliday, who will step down after six years as chair and nearly 11 as a board director.

"We are emerging from the Covid-19 pandemic with a clear and distinct strategy that I believe will enable us to seize opportunities presented by the energy transition," Shell CEO Ben van Beurden commented. "I cannot think of anyone better than Andrew to take this role."

Mackenzie, who joined the Shell board in October last year, has had career in energy, petrochemicals and resources spanning decades. He held senior leadership roles in exploration, research and development during a 22-year career at BP, headed industrial minerals and diamonds at mining group Rio Tinto and served as CEO at BHP where he set a goal for cutting emissions from its products.

Shell also announced that Nigel Sheinwald, non-executive director, chair of the safety, environment and sustainability committee and a member of the nomination of succession committee, would not stand for re-election at the 2021 AGM. Jane Lute has been proposed as a new non-executive director starting on May 19.
