TH Plantations, Cenergi SEA to build biogas power plant in Malaysia

Plantations company TH Plantations has signed an agreement with energy company Cenergi SEA to construct and operate a 1.2 MW biogas-fired power plant in Kluang, Johor, Malaysia, the company announced on June 13.

The biogas will be produced from palm oil mill effluent from the Bukit Lawiang palm oil mill, owned by TH Plantations and located in Johor. The generated power will be sold to the electricity company Tenaga Nasional under the Sustainable Energy Development Authority Malaysia programme.

The project will be executed through a joint venture between THP Applications and Services and Cenergi RE.

“The joint venture presents an opportunity for the THP Group to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and signifies our commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in our day-to-day mill operations,” TH Plantations stated.

In a separate LinkedIn post, Cenergi SEA said that the biogas power plant is set to commence operations in 2026 and will have the capacity to power up to 1,500 homes annually. Additionally, it is expected to prevent 20,000 tonnes/year of carbon emissions.
