A gas interconnector joining Romania and Bulgaria plans to be operational in 2013.
An announcement to this effect was made Wednesday during a meeting in Bucharest between Bulgarian energy minister Traicho Traikov and his Romanian counterpart Jon Ariton.
Bulgaria's gas transmission system operator Bulgartransgas, which is in charge of the project together with Romania's Transgaz are moving forward with a study on the the underwater section of the gas link which will cross the Danube.
Traikov pointed out the importance of the project for the diversification of Bulgarian energy supplies.
"Building interconnections with neighbouring countries is an important part of Bulgaria's strategy to diversify energy sources and improve security of supply", Traikov was quoted as saying by its press office.
The ministers also discussed shale gas exploration in Europe, sharing the opinion that the development of this resource would guarantee more energy independency to Romania and Bulgaria.
