Total ranks top in sustainability study
Total has ranked as the top oil and gas company in a study by BloombergNEF on the extent that corporate strategies align with UN sustainable development goals, the French major reported on April 28.
The company received a score of 97 out of 100, ranking in first place in the oil and gas sector. It came in third place in the four sectors covered by the study, which also included utilities, metals and mining and consumer goods.

"Total is resolutely engaged in a transformation that addresses the challenges of the sustainable development agenda: fighting global warming, delivering tangible solutions and actively promoting a just transition," CEO Patrick Pouyanne said. "Total wants to be a benchmark for corporate commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals, and I am delighted that our teams’ engagement has been recognised with this first ranking."
BloombergNEF's study assessed companies in 1o categories of criteria, in terms of how they had integrated sustainable development goals into their strategies and identified priority impacts and improvement targets. Transparency is also taken into account.
Total aims to bring its Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions to net zero by 2050 in Europe, while targeting a 60% reduction worldwide. The company said in March it would partly link executive bonuses to its progress in scaling back Scope 3 emissions from the use of its products by European customers.
