UK, Canada to Pull Together on CCS Technology
The UK and Canada signed an agreement to work together on CCS technologies. The two countries will promote research and innovation cooperation, while sharing their existing knowledge.
‘The Participants will explore two-way secondments between key UK and Canadian CCS institutions (including Governmental) to embed best practice and deepen policy and technical expertise’ reads the joint statement released on Tuesday.
British authorities said that the country intends to be one of the world’s frontrunners in the sector. The UK is currently working on two projects - Peterhead in Scotland and White Rose in Yorkshire.
“Carbon Capture and Storage could help us tackle climate change. I welcome the fact that the UK and Canada will be working together to advance the technology. Our agreement is an important step forward for the carbon capture and storage sector, and I look forward to further UK-Canada cooperation’ Minister of State for Energy, Matthew Hancock commented.
Hancock met with his Canadian colleague Bob Hamilton, reminding the ongoing cooperation of the two countries in the North Sea.
“Canadian companies such as Talisman, Nexen-CNOOC, Canadian Natural Resources and Suncor play a vital role in the economy of our North Sea.”
London is willing to cooperate with Ottawa also on shale gas, benefitting from Canadian expertise and experience in the field.
On the other hand, Hancock called on British companies to ratchet up investments in Canada.
“We want to see more British companies active in the energy supply chain across Canada. We have seen success in new British exporters entering the market.”
