Wartsila unveils ammonia fuel supply system for ships

Wartsila Gas Solutions, a division of the technology group Wartsila, on February 27 announced the introduction of its ammonia fuel supply system (AFSS) for ships capable of operating with ammonia fuel. This system caters to both liquid and gaseous forms of ammonia.

Ammonia stands out as a promising candidate for marine fuel, playing a role in reducing CO2 emissions while virtually eliminating sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions.

The AFSS is adaptable for both newbuild vessels and retrofit installations on existing ships. It functions as an integrated cargo handling and fuel supply system on vessels transporting liquefied gas, particularly those trading ammonia as cargo, such as very large gas carriers and medium gas carriers. Additionally, it serves as a standalone fuel supply system on vessels compliant with the International Code of Safety for Gas-Fueled Ships with low or high-pressure systems, or a combination of both.

The AFSS employs a system comprising pumps and heat exchangers to ensure a stable and reliable fuel flow to the engine at the correct pressure and temperature.

The inaugural Wartsila AFSS will be installed on two upcoming gas carriers at the Hyundai Mipo Dockyards in Korea, commissioned for Exmar LPG.
